ENGLISH GRAMMAR / DICTIONARY

There is a fantastic English book to help learners with real English. It is called ENGLISH USAGE, from The Cobuild Series, The University of Birmingham and Collins Cobuild, published by HarperCollins Publishers.

It's highly recommended for those who want to really understand and learn the English language.

Collins Cobuild Student's Dictionary is a very good and useful tool for students and all those who need a different kind of dictionary. It presents the English language in a clear, user-friendly, and understandable way, being ideal for the intermediate learner of English (but for those who are still beginners it is a wonderful tool also). It provides detailed treatment of the central core of the language - the words everyone needs to know how to use.

Phrasal Verbs: how many times you heard this expression? What is a phrasal verb? It is a phrase made up of a verb and one or more prepositions (or adverbs). The meaning of the whole phrase cannot be deduced from the component words. For example, you may understand the words RUN and ACROSS, but still do not understand the sentence HE RUN ACROSS A FRIEND.

There are thousands of phrasal verbs in English, and only practice and long time learning and speaking English will make you an expert in phrasal verbs. I would suggest a good dictionary on phrasal verbs to begin with, and would recommend LONGAN DICTIONARY OF PHRASAL VERBS. It contains over 12,000 entries, covering both British and North American usage.
